The Republic of Moldova imported a total amount of 948.2 thousand tons of petroleum products in 2024, registering an increase of about 4.5% compared to the previous year. The largest quantity was diesel, - over 73 percent of total imports. Romania remained the main fuel supplier, delivering more than 99 percent of imported gasoline, more than 74 percent of diesel and 69 percent of liquefied gas, IPN reports.
According to the report published by the National Energy Regulatory Agency, 22 licenses for activities in the petroleum products sector were issued in 2024, another 25 were extended for five years. On the domestic market, 78 companies licensed to sell gasoline and diesel were operating through a network of 555 filling stations, while 70 operators were selling liquefied gas in 484 stations.
Import prices fluctuated during the year. For example, the average import price of gasoline ranged from $741 per ton in December last year to $973.7 per ton in the current period. Diesel reached a high of $914.6 per ton in February, and liquefied gas saw the highest value in November - $757.2 per ton.
Domestic consumption of petroleum products increased, especially for gasoline and diesel, while demand for liquefied gas fell slightly. At the end of the year, available stocks covered consumption for 25 days for gasoline, 16 days for diesel and 21 days for liquefied gas.
According to the report, the most in-demand fuel remains standard diesel, which accounted for more than 81 percent of the total sold wholesale and more than 55 percent of the volume sold at filling stations. Compared to the previous year, sales of standard diesel increased by more than 157 thousand tons on the wholesale market and by more than 13 thousand tons at retail. At the same time, there were also increases in sales of standard gasoline, both wholesale and retail.
