From Paris to Beijing by bike via Moldova

The participants in the sports project “Paris-Beijing on Bicycle” – an initiative of the French Cyclotourism Federation implemented under the auspices of President Nicolas Sarkozy, will cross Moldova on a distance of 60 kilometers. The cyclists will make a stop in Albota de Jos village in Taraclia district between April 17 and 18, Info-Prim Neo reports. A number of 115 cyclists and companions, including 76 women, are taking part in the race. The participants will cover 12,000 km and cross 12 countries. The sportsmen set off on March 16 from Paris and are to get to the Great Wall of China on August 3. According to organizers, the race is not a time trial, but one that stimulates perseverance and vigor, promotes joy in an effort of solidarity and is a cultural exchange aimed at promoting the protection of the environment and the contact with the local authorities. The organizers say that the sports objectives of the race are to make a bridge between two capitals that are located at a distance of 12,000 kilometers, to promote the Olympic spirit and the values of cyclotourism and to familiarize with the traditions of the crossed countries. In Moldova, the project participants will donate 14 bicycles to the schoolchildren from Albota de Jos and Hartop villages and will transmit messages of solidarity from the French students to them. Representatives of 11 countries are taking part in the project. Moldova does not participate in the event.
