French senator Robert Badinter comes to promote children's rights in Chisinau

French senator and professor Robert Badinter will visit Moldova on April 16 as part of a regional tour aimed at promoting reforms in favor of children, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a news conference, the French Ambassador to Moldova Pierre Andrieu said Robert Badinter, who is a famous promoter of human rights, will visit penitentiary No. 13 in Chisinau to see the conditions in which the children are held. “When a child comes into conflict with the law, he must be treated as a minor, according to the Convention. Emphasis should be paid not on the punishment, but on the subsequent rehabilitation of these children and their reintegration into the society,” UNICEF Moldova communication programs coordinator Angela Munteanu told the same news conference. Senator Robert Badinter will have meetings with members of the Government and representatives of the civil society. He will deliver a speech at the State University of Moldova and will give a news conference. “Robert Badinter comes with reforms and the wish to help the Government of Moldova promote reforms for children, as regards the shortening of the punishment term and implementation of alternative detention measures,” said Sorin Hanganu, UNICEF Moldova project coordinator. Robert Badinter is known for his struggle against the death penalty. His visit to Chisinau is organized by UNICEF and the Embassy of France in cooperation with the Delegation of the European Union and the Council of Europe.
