Freight and passenger traffic goes down

The volume of freight and passenger traffic in the eleven months to November had decreased compared with the corresponding period last year, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the National Bureau of Statistics. The railway, air, fluvial and road carriers over January-November this year transported 7.183,8 million tonnes of goods, or 45.7% of the volume recorded in the same period last year. The distance covered by the goods in this period was 2,460.3 million tonne-km, or 54.1% of the January-November 2008 level. The volume of railway freight declined by 62.2%, of road freight – by 39.3%, of fluvial freight – by 7.0%, of air fright – by 2.2%. 3.026,9 million tonnes of goods were transported by trucks. This is 60.7% of the 2008 volume. The railway carriers conveyed 3.978,6 million tonnes of goods, which is 37.8% of the last year's volume. The number of passengers transported by buses and minibuses during the first eleven months of this year fell by 5.8%, by planes – by 3.1%, by trains – by 8.2%, while by fluvial units of transport rose by 12.1%. At the same time, the volume of freight and the distance covered by the goods last month increased slightly compared with October this year. The information does not cover the districts located on the left bank of the Nistru and the municipality of Bender.
