The farmers anticipate that the corn this year will be three times larger than last year. However, if August is dry, the quality of grains will worsen, the chairman of the National Federation of Employers in Agriculture and Food Industry Alexandru Slusari has told IPN.
Now the corn plants are very high. Each of them has by 2-3 corncobs. The corn does not resist well when it is very hot and there is wind. “Rain is needed in August. For example, in some regions in southern Moldova no rain has fallen since July 1. Nevertheless, the harvest will be larger – about three tonnes of grains per hectare,” said Alexandru Slusari.
He also said that the price of corn will depend on the situation in the neighboring countries. Moldova exports corn when there is overproduction.
A sack of grains now cost about 200 lei. According to Alexandru Slusari, the farmers hope the price will not fell under 2 lei per kilogram.
