Foxes are main source of rabies in Moldova

Only one case of rabies in humans was recorded in Moldova since 2003 until 2016. But rabies continues to be spread among foxes, polecats, badgers and other animals. The cats and dogs without a master, whose number is on the rise, also pose a threat of infection. Foxes remain yet the main source of rabies. These attack sheep, goats and cows and turn these into a source of infection for humans, IPN reports.

During the last five years, rabies was detected in 155 animals on average a year. In the context of the World Rabies Day, which is celebrated on September 28, the National Public Health Center warns that rabies is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system. The virus is transmitted to animals and humans by bites and when the infected saliva of a rabid animal comes into contact with scratches or open skin wounds.

To prevent the spread of rabies, pet animals should be vaccinated annually, domestic animals should not be allowed to stroll, while children should not be allowed to touch unknown animals. The sanitary-veterinary authorities should be informed immediately when an animal behaves strangely. In case of bites, the wound should be washed with water and soap and the family doctor should be seen immediately.

The prophylactic treatment is free and includes concentrated anti-rabies vaccine and, if need be, specific immunoglobulin.
