The fourth regional pediatric emergency and intensive care center was opened in Cahul on April 25 within the reform initiated by the Health Ministry. The reform envisions the regionalization of these services with a view to increasing the child survival rate. The new medical unit called the Emergency Admissions Section was set up at the Cahul District Hospital with the support of the REPEMOL project. The section will work round-the-clock and will serve the entire southern part of Moldova, IPN reports.

Attending the opening, Deputy Health Minister Gheorghe Turcanu said the REPEMOL project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is very important for the emergency medicine of Moldova. REPEMOL donated medical equipment to the value of 13 million lei to the Cahul District Hospital. The room reconstruction works were financed by the National Health Insurance Company (1.2m lei) and the Cahul District Council (3.1m lei).

Georgette Bruchez, director of the SDC Cooperation Office, said the donated equipment is not the only contribution of the organization to this project. “The specialists were trained so that the quality of the services is improved. This event is only a start. We will continue to provide support,” she stated.

According to REPEMOL coordinator Silvia Morgoci, equipment was donated not only to the Emergency Admissions Section, but also to the Intensive Care Section and a part of the apparatus started to be used over a year ago.

Head of Parliament Marian Lupu approved of the initiatives of the authorities and backers. Within the REPEMOL project, another three emergency admissions sections were opened at the Balti Municipal Hospital and at the National Children’s Hospital “V. Ignatenko” and the Mother and Child Center in Chisinau.
