The psycho-neurological residential institutions for adults in Badiceni, Branzeni, Cocieri and Balti municipality are being transformed thanks to the joint efforts of the Czech Republic and the Republic of Moldova. Based on the assessment of each person in these residential institutions, the authorities will gradually replace the residential care for persons with disabilities who can live independently by alternative social services adjusted to the individual needs, IPN reports.
Four homes to help the deinstitutionalized persons start a new life in the community have been purchased so far with the support of the Czech Government. “Life in the community is much more different than in a psycho-neurological residential institution. When they leave the residential institution and return to their native place, near relatives and neighbors, the adults with disability regain dignity, independence and rights,” it is said in a press release of the Czech Development Agency.
The switchover from residential care to community-based care and diminution of the stigmatization of persons with disabilities were possible within the project “Support to the process of transforming the care system for persons with psychosocial disabilities in the Republic of Moldova”. This is financed by the Czech Development Agency and implemented by the Mental Health Center of the Czech Republic in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection and the organizations People in Need Moldova and Keystone Moldova.
The service enables the persons with mental or psychosocial disabilities to freely access all the services in the community, such as to go to the family doctor, to receive support from the social assistant, to take part in events and festivities staged by the mayor’s office and to become employed. The inclusion increases the quality of life of these persons, who can become active members of society. At community level, the people become more receptive and understanding and renounce prejudice against persons with disabilities.
