Four cases of African swine fever confirmed in Leova district

Four cases of African swine fever were confirmed in household farms in two villages of Leova district, Tomai and Covurlui. The Cantemir local food safety subdivision was notified of the result of laboratory tests so as to take the necessary measures to eliminate the hotbed, IPN reports, quoting the National Food Safety Agency.

Eight hotbeds of African swine fever have been recorded so far this year. Of these, seven were in domestic pigs in non-professional farms and one was in a wild boar. There were destroyed 134 domestic pigs and a wild boar.

In 2016-2022, there were reported 115 hotbeds and destroyed 32,580 domestic pigs and 223 wild boars.

The Agency requests pig owners to urgently inform about infection or death of animals or when bodies of wild boars are identified. These are warned not to give freshly harvested grain crops, food waste to pigs to eat as these can also lead to the infection of pigs with African swine fever and to strictly obey the minimum biosecurity requirements. The people are urged not to purchase food products from unauthorized places and from the neighboring countries for bringing them into Moldova.
