Former SIS head: “A coup and assassination of Voronin were attempted on April 7”

Former head of the Information and Security Service Artur Reshetnikov said the April 2009 events constituted an attempted coup and attempt to assassinate former President Vladimir Voronin and force the police to react by using firearms. Reshetnikov made the statements after he was questioned by prosecutors as a witness in the case opened over the April events, Info-Prim Neo reports. “They wanted victims and bloodshed. I was ordered to avoid bloodshed. The police were told not to use the guns. I'm proud that we did not allow violence as those provocations were not aimed at devastating the official buildings, but at exerting pressure on the police to use firearms. There was also an attempt to assassinate former head of state Vladimir Voronin,” Reshetnikov said. He also said that at the end of March he was furnished with information according to which a large number of Romanian young people were to come to Moldova to participate in the March 27 celebrations and chant anti-state slogans in the Great National Assembly Square. According to the same information, those young people could remain in Moldova until the April 5 legislative elections. The authorities were informed and those young people's access to Moldova was limited. Artur Reshetnikov regrets it that he was not called to work on the parliamentary inquiry commission headed by Vitalie Nagacevski. “Nagacevski was one of the first to throw stones and chant anti-state slogans. It is not right that a person who took part in those events conducts investigations,” he said.
