Former SIS director under house arrest

Vasile Botnari, former director of the Security and Intelligence Service, has been put under house arrest after spending 30 days of preventive arrest on unjust enrichment charges.

Prosecutors, who sought an extension of the preventive arrest, announced they will appeal the commutation.

“The court did not accept the arguments of prosecutors who presented evidence justifying the timeliness of the risks that require the detainee to be remanded in custody and ordered the replacement of pretrial detention with house arrest for 30 days”, said the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office.

Vasile Botnari is accused of purchasing real estate and securities through proxies while holding public posts in 2014-2019 and registering them in the name of relatives or cronies.
