Former president of Bălți Appeals Court charged on two counts

The ex-president of the Bălți Appeals Court Alexandru Gheorghieș was charged on two accounts – filing of fraudulent tax returns and unjust enrichment. He is accused of intentionally not including particular data in his property and personal interest statement, IPN reports.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said that the former judge hid real estate in 2019, when he managed the Court, and in 2020, when he held the post of judge. He registered this in the name of other persons, but made investments in it.

The former judge is also investigated for unjust enrichment. In this case, prosecutors a week ago confiscated a building lot to the value of over 1.7 million lei and two cars worth over 825,000 lei.

Judge Alexandru Gheorghieș was arrested on unjust enrichment charges on November 16, 2021. Money whose origin the judge could not justify was found as a result of searches in his office and home. In March, the judge tendered his resignation and left the judicial system.

Currently, Alexandru Gheorghieș is under ban and cannot leave the country.
