Former National Security Committee chair Chiril Moțpan voices concerns over May 9 demonstrations

Chiril Moțpan, former MP and chair of the National Security Committee, is concerned about possible provocations during the May 9 demonstrations and urges people “who want peace” to avoid taking part in them.

“There is a high probability that on May 9 Russian agents, represented by Communists and Socialists, will try to repeat the scrip that was run in Ukraine in 2014, when pro-Russian forces took to the streets with bicolored ribbons demanding the creation of the so-called Novorossiya. On May 9, the leaders of pro-Russian political forces in Moldova may want to destabilize the situation in Chisinau. Let’s not forget that in Transnistria there is a rather large contingent of armed forces of the separatist regime, but also the Task Force of the Russian troops, which can back up the disturbances fomented by the Russian agents”, the politician posted on his Facebook account.

As a participant in the 1992 military conflict, Chiril Moțpan recalled the early 1990s, “when a wave of ‘special operations’, apparently instigated by the special services of the Russian Federation, included a number of states that had declared independence. That’s what happened in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, in Crimea, but also in Transnistria, which has ended up in the hands of Kremlin puppets”.

According to him, given that “not only a theoretical threat” is looming over the Republic of Moldova, “but a very real one”, “Chisinau officials have a duty to act quickly and radically:

• The Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova must be officially recognized as a territory occupied by Russia, and Parliament must decide in accordance with the PACE decision;

• Parliament should demand the deployment of UN peacekeeping troops, the so-called “blue helmets”, on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, which would discourage the escalation of the military conflict on the territory of our country;

• Parliament should request military support from Ukraine in the event of an open military operation against the Republic of Moldova. That would prevent threats to the security of our state.”

The former lawmaker urges the population not to participate in the May 9 demonstrations.

“Everyone who wants peace, who says ‘never again’, cannot take part in the Russian propaganda actions on May 9, along with those who will chant “we can do it again”. This would mean indirect support for another so-called ‘special operation’ by the Russian Federation, this time on our soil. Everyone stands with Ukraine today in its heroic fight against evil. Everyone will stand with us, too, if we do not sell our dignity. We cannot rely on the aggressor’s mercy. And no one is attacking the strong and determined to defend their independence and right to life. United we are strong”, declared Chiril Moțpan.
