Former heads of state will no longer be provided offices and personal assistants

Former country presidents will no longer be provided with office and personal assistants, paid by the state, and will only be able to use the service car on request, for the course of 4 years after their mandate expires. The government has approved amendments to this effect in the Law on ensuring the activity of the President of the Republic of Moldova.

The changes were operated "in the context of budgetary expense optimization and implementation of better targeted and sustainable saving measures".

Estimates show that these benefit limitations will save up to half a million lei annually.

In December 2016, the office and the personal assistant were included in the list of social guarantees offered to former presidents. One of the authors, former President of Parliament, Andrian Candu, said that, after discussions with former presidents of the Republic of Moldova and other foreign dignitaries, he found that several protocol issues involve communication between former presidents. In order to facilitate the communication between former local and foreign presidents and delegates, it was decided to open an office and hire an assistant which would handle mail and telephone related activity.
