The former finance minister Veaceslav Negruța today testified before the parliamentary commission investigating the infamous $1 billion bank fraud. The commission’s chairman, MP Alexandru Slusari (ACUM/DA), says Negruța presented “important information that confirmed the commission’s main line of inquiry”, without giving details on which would it be.
Slusari told reporters that Veaceslav Ioniță, chair of the Budget and Finance parliamentary commission during 2009-2014, was a no-show today. The former official has been re-summoned to testify on Thursday, alongside Valeriu Lazăr, minister of economy in the same period. “Next week we’ve subpoenaed further witnesses to be heard. We are progressing very well,” sai Alexandru Slusari.
Slusari added that the commission sent two formal requests to the National Bank to submit copies of the contracts for the First and Second Kroll reports, and the list of NBM department heads in office during 2012-2014. A separate request was sent to Parliament’s Secretariat with the demand to submit the stenograph of a crucial meeting of the Budget and Finance commission in April 2013 which blocked the capitalization of the now bankrupt Banca de Economii.
The ‘bank fraud’ inquiry commission, consisting of ACUM and Socialist lawmakers, plans to hear a total of 20 incumbent or former officials and experts.
