Former deputy minister about reform at Ministry of Interior

The reform at the Ministry of the Interior resulted in the destruction of the police system and the distancing of the police from society, considers former deputy minister of the interior Ghenadie Cosovan, who made such statements in the program “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.

Ghenadie Cosovan accused Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean, who is now acting, of naming dilettantes to key posts and of ignoring the professionals. “Starting with 2013, there have been supported dilettantes and adventurers who came to the police to satisfy personal evil interests. During a year, some of these persons were promoted from lieutenant major to lieutenant colonel without these persons taking part in arrests at least once. There is even a deputy minister of the interior who was conferred the rank of colonel overnight without doing at least something heroic. Meanwhile, police officers whose merits were recognized even abroad were removed from the system,” said the former functionary.

Colonel Cosovan believes that it was a mistake to remove the sector inspectors from the administration of the local public administration. “Now the mayor has no leverage in the fight against crime and in maintaining public order, as his post requires. The mayor also cannot fight street trading, unauthorized publicity or the sale of counterfeit goods,” he stated.

Ghenadie Cosovan considers the fact that the food ration and housing benefits for police officers were annulled was also a mistake. “A policeman earlier could survive, but now this is impossible. The salary of a police officer is of 3,000 lei. This money is not enough for paying rent, keeping the family, purchasing uniform and supplies and even fuel for his police car,” he said.

According to the former deputy minister, the police became excessively politicized. “It is more serious as during the time of the Communist government. Voronin then declared that any police officer will be dismissed if they dare to become party members and he kept his promise. Now the police chiefs are party members and even take part in the party meetings,” said Ghenadie Cosovan.

He noted that there are a number of candidates for the post of minister of the interior in the future Cabinet, but this post will most probably be occupied by an employee of the police system who is younger than 40, who received training outside the country and who achieved good results in the fight against crime outside the country too.
