Former convicts will be helped to integrate into society

The persons released from prison will be helped to integrate into society, to find a job and a place to stay. They will also receive a lump sum equal to the average salary for the year preceding the imprisonment year. A bill to this effect was adopted by Parliament on October 25, IPN reports.

According to Deputy Minister of Justice Nicolae Esanu, the bill provides for the constitution of a national council that will deal with the integration of former convicts into society. The local authorities will help the persons who served time in jail to find a place to stay and should have a special fund to support them financially if they are unable to find a job.

Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu said it is not within the competence of the mayor to take care of former prisoners. This should be the duty of the Government.

In the second reading, the bill will contain an amendment saying that the local public authorities are recommended to provide support to former convicts.
