The former members of the Constitutional Court who were invited to hearings at the commission of inquiry into the anti-constitutional putsch attempted by the Democratic Party during June 7-14, 2019 didn’t show up. The six ex-judges of the CC sent a letter undersigned by them, saying they are not obliged to present themselves at the hearings, IPN reports.

According to the commission’s chairman Mihai Popșoi, the six former CC judges argue they are irremovable during their independent tenure and obey the Constitution. They also make reference to the law on the Constitutional Court and the Code of Constitutional Jurisdiction that provide the CC judges cannot be held accountable for their votes and opinions stated while holding office and also after the completion of their duties. “They refused to come thinking probably that they enjoy the protection of the current PD-PSRM parliamentary majority,” stated Mihai Popșoi.

He also said that if the former CC judges had come, they would have been asked if and how their decision was influenced, if during the hearings and on the day before the hearings they came into contact with representatives of the political class or why a number of videos from inside and outside the CC disappeared or weren’t kept longer.

Mihai Popșoi noted the commission’s mandate will soon expire and he anticipates that the current parliamentary majority will not extend it.
