Former Chisinau police chief hospitalized for hypertension, fails to meet with prosecutors

Chisinau's former police chief Iacob Gumenitsa was hospitalized for hypertension treatment this morning, around 10:00AM, about one hour after he was due to appear before the General Prosecutor's Office for interrogations over last April's events. Anatol Proca, a spokesperson for the Emergency Service, has told Info-Prim Neo Gumenitsa's wife called for an ambulance at 10:04AM. The paramedics diagnosed him with hypertension and rushed him to hospital. At 2:00PM, staff at the hospital's admission section were not aware if Iacob Gumenitsa was still in hospital care. In a surveillance camera footage recently released by Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, Iacob Gumenitsa was allegedly identified as being among the police officers who maltreated young people in Chisinau's central plaza following protests on April 7, 2009. Prosecutor Ion Diacov doesn't rule out that Iacob Gumenitsa feigned his condition to avoid interrogations. He has told reporters the prosecutors will verify today's incident and will make Gumenitsa appear before them by force if it proves to be a hoax.
