Former chief of Cahul Penitentiary and lawyer under arrest

Officers of the National Anticorruption Center arrested the ex-head of the Cahul-based Penitentiary No. 5 and a lawyer on corruption-related charges. They are both suspected of traffic of influence and enticement of the family of a man who was sentenced to 18 years in jail to give €16,000 and over US$13,000 to them. The two were arrested before the Cahul Appeals Court where the former penitentiary chief went to a hearing as a defendant in a case of use of torture, IPN reports.

According to the National Anticorruption Center, it was established that in 2014-2016 the suspects asked the aforementioned sums from the detainee’s mother for influencing functionaries of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions and judges to set free her son before time.

The denouncer said the two asserted that they can obtain a certificate showing that the convict suffers from a serious disease from the special medical commission of the Department and this would help release the convict before time.

The suspects were placed under arrest for 72 hours. The investigation goes on, being conducted by the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office.
