Former Bălți Appeals Court president to stay under house arrest for 30 days more

The Ciocana Court accepted the prosecutors’ request and ordered 30 days of house arrest for the former president of the Bălți Appeals Court Alexandru Gheorghieș, who is investigated for unjust enrichment, IPN reports.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said the prosecutors’ request was fully accepted. A warrant for 30 days of house arrest was issued and the earlier imposed restrictions and obligations were maintained.

The decision can be appealed to the Chisinau Appeals Court within three days.

Judge Alexandru Gheorghieș was arrested on November 16, being suspected of unjust enrichment. As a result of searches conducted at his home and office, sums of money whose origin the judge could not justify were seized.

According to press reports, since 2014, the judge amassed various types of real estate through proxies, which he failed to declare.

For his part, Gheorghieș told reporters that he bought the unfinished house after he sold his apartment and in time revamped the house. According to him, prosecutors’ acts are aimed at preparing a platform for the General Assembly of Judges and at discouraging other judges from contending for member of the Superior Council of Magistracy.
