Three men, including a former Border Police employee, were arrested on suspicion of distributing large amounts of forged banknotes. The police said they managed to prevent the putting into circulation of forged euro bills totaling €33,000 with the nominal value of 50 and 200, which were brought from Europe into Moldova, IPN reports.
Prosecutor Sergiu Rosu told a news conference that the illegal activities of the three suspects aged between 25 and 35 had been documented during nine months. One of the group members was arrested recently, when he transmitted €20,000 to an agent under cover.
Alexei Bacos, division head at the National Investigations Inspectorate, said the banknotes were of a very high quality and it was practically impossible to establish their fakeness without the assistance of a specialist. It is presumed that the bills were forged in EU member states and then smuggled into Moldova. The suspect who earlier worked for the Border Police facilitated the smuggling.
The police are to establish all the circumstances of this case. The suspects face 7 to 15 years behind bars.
