The Moldovan Ministry of External Affairs and European Integration stated Monday Moldova aligned itself to the to the statement of the French Presidency of the EU on the situation in South Ossetia, launched on August 8 at the extraordinary meeting held by the Permanent Council of the OSCE, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the Ministry, the statement reads that “the Presidency of the European Union expresses concern over the last incidents that have occurred in South Ossetia (Georgia) and caused human casualties, against an already tense background. The Presidency calls on the Parties to show restraint and to resume dialog as soon as possible in order to restore confidence. The EU is carefully monitoring changes in the situation in conflict zones in Georgia.“ On August 11, a series of Moldovan political parties have expressed their concern with the bloody events taking place in Georgia. The Social-Democratic Party has issued a statement reading that “the delayed response of the international institutions, the UN's incapacity to adopt a clear resolution condemning the war as a means of solving political issues repeatedly demonstrate the international community remains vulnerable in front of the contemporary challenges”. According to the party, the tergiversation of identifying solutions to frozen conflicts amplifies the risks they may impel themselves on the agenda of the international community with dramatic consequences and results that could have been avoided. The Liberal-Democratic leader, Vlad Filat, says the hostilities in Caucasia have proved that a side involved in the conflict cannot be a peace-keeper. “The Russian Federation definitely lost its capacity of a peace-keeper in South Ossetia. In this context, the Moldovan Government should ask, more energetically and insistently, the replacement of the Russian peace-keepers in the Transnistrian area with international forces,” Vlad Filat told a news conference. The European Action Movement Party has criticized the lack of a prompt official response on behalf of the Moldovan authorities as “to the Russian aggression on Georgia.” Member of the Liberal Party picketed the Russian embassy to Chisinau and the Government, expressing their sympathy with the Georgians, in a military conflict with the Russian Federation, and condemned the lack of reaction of the Government as to the situation.
