Foreign Ministry: Number of ballots distributed to polls abroad was by 6.4% higher

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration said 288,850 ballots were sent to the 100 polling places abroad for the presidential runoff, an increase of 6.4% compared with the first round of elections. According to the preliminary data of the Central Election Commission, 153,135 ballots haven’t been used, which is about 53%, IPN reports.

The Ministry noted the Election Code clearly stipulates the conditions for establishing polling places abroad, including registration by Moldovans who are abroad beforehand and the number of persons who voted in the previous elections. It thus suggested setting up 100 polling places abroad, 60 of which outside embassies. This is the highest number of polling places established abroad so far, by 5 more than in 2014 and by 25 more than in 2010. In order to facilitate access to voting and offer optimal conditions, in concert with the Central Election Commission it was decided to increase the number of members of electoral bureaus and of the ballots intended for polls abroad.

In virtue of its duties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, together with other players involved, will order to thoroughly examine the applications submitted by Moldovans and to appropriately respond to them.
