The Government must be attentive to the demands of the people protesting in the street, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden Margot Wallström said in an interview for the program “Moldova live” produced by the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.
“We think the people protested against frauds and corruption. Those who took to the streets carried the European flags, which is a proof of their European aspirations. This is welcome. In the EU, there is no place for frauds and corruption,” said Linas Linkevičius.
He voiced hope that the events will not degenerate into a maidan like in Kiev. “This massive protest was also mounted because there is no sufficient communication between the Government and the people. Let’s hope that the Government will be attentive to protesters’ demands and things will not lead to a maidan,” said the Lithuanian official.
Linas Linkevičius also said that the Government of Moldova should do its utmost to do reforms so as to be able to continue on the path of European integration. “We support the Republic of Moldova. But the state must not play with the implementation of reforms. Success does not come itself. A lot of work is needed. It depends on you if you obtain the status of candidate for accession to the EU, but this thing will definitely not happen tomorrow or next week,” he stated.
Margot Wallström also considers the frauds and corruption made the people take to the streets. “The people must be the center of attention. The oligarchic system should be dismantled,” she said.
Margot Wallström noted that their visit to Chisinau pursued two goals – to show support and to collect facts. “We came with a message of support, but also came to inspect things to see which of the tasks set by the EU were carried out. We will continue to support the Republic of Moldova and will be its friends, but you have yet a lot to do,” she stated.
Linas Linkevičius and Margot Wallström paid a visit to Chisinau on May 4.
