A 39-year-old man, a foreign citizen, has been detained by Chisinau police on suspicion of involvement, in complicity with other men, in a series of thefts from homes and cars in the capital's Riscani sector. At least nine thefts were committed between June and September 2024, IPN reports.
According to police, the suspects operated at night, breaking windows of homes and cars, from which they stole cash, gold jewelry and other valuables.
The total damage caused to the victims amounted to around 400 000 lei.
Cristina Talpa, press officer at the Chisinau Municipal Police Directorate, said that a criminal case has been opened and investigations are continuing to gather the necessary evidence.
"The accomplices are identified and are also foreign citizens. The police are still accumulating all evidentiary material against all the figures," the press officer said.
The detained man is legally on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. At his home, police found some of the stolen goods, which were returned to their owners.
The other three accomplices were internationally wanted.
Under current legislation, such offenses can be punishable by up to six years in prison.
