Foreign Affairs Minister: Chisinau banks on assistance in identifying solution to Transnistrian conflict

The Moldovan authorities bank on the practical assistance of the Polish OSCE Chairmanship and of other foreign partners involved in the identification of a viable solution for peacefully and comprehensively resolving the conflict in the eastern districts, Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, stated in a meeting with Ambassador Thomas Mayr-Harting, Special Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office for the Transnistrian Settlement Process, IPN reports.

The two diplomats discussed the developments in the Transnistria settlement process and considered the prospects of advancing the process. “We aim to maintain a dynamic and constructive dialogue on the existing negotiation platforms and welcome the adoption of the OSCE Ministerial Council Statement on the 5+2 talks by which the OSCE participating states underscore the necessity of solving the conflict by respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country within the internationally recognized borders,” said Nicu Popescu, being quoted in a press release.

“I underlined the necessity of devoting increased attention and of combining forces for ensuring the observance of the basic human rights and freedoms in the Transnistrian region of the country, given the continuous worsening of this state of affairs.”

The officials conferred on current problems that affect the daily life of the citizens from both sides of the Nistru River.

On February 2, Ambassador Thomas Mayr-Harting had meetings with Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian and Deputy Parliament Speaker Mihai Popșoi with whom he discussed the Transnistrian conflict settlement.
