Food safety inspectors check cooking facilities in schools and kindergartens

At about 70% of the kindergartens and slightly overt 80% of the schools, the cooking facilities meet the requirements, said inspectors of the National Food Safety Agency who visited the institutions in June-August this year. The information was presented in a public event at the Agency on August 23, IPN reports.

The Agency’s vice director Ion Toma said the inspections covered the cooking facilities of 1,103 kindergartens of the total 1,379. It was established that 72% of the institutions meet the norms. The situation improved compared with 2017, when this percentage was 66.5%. Some 83% of the cooking facilities at the examined 1,203 schools meet the requirements, as opposed to only 73.8% last year.

The inspectors established that a number of the facilities are in need of repair and their equipment is outdated. Some of the facilities didn’t have enough working surfaces or areas and technological and frigorific equipment or didn’t have running water, sewerage systems and water heating equipment. Other institutions lacked a proper ventilation system and skilled personnel.

As a result of the inspections carried out in 2017-2018, fines were imposed on 35 schools and 43 kindergartens. A number of 755 schools and over 900 kindergartens were issued with prescriptions.
