Poet Grigore Vieru is commemorated in Chisinau on February 14, the day he would have turned 90. Students, along with teachers, friends of the poet, as well as representatives of state institutions laid flowers at the bust on the Alley of Classical Writers in the central park of Chisinau, IPN reports.
"Grigore Vieru is the one who, through his simplicity and depth, dedicated poems to the homeland, to the Romanian language, to the Romanian people, to love. Today we are in unison with the great poet, the symbol of national identity and independence," said deputy mayor of Chisinau Angela Kutasevich, who was accompanied by other representatives of the City Hall.
Flowers were also laid by Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan. "Flowers to poet Grigore Vieru on his birthday and on the National Reading Day. Let's honor him and keep the legacy he left to us," Minister Prodan wrote on Facebook.
Grigore Vieru was born on February 14, 1935 in the village of Pererâta in Briceni district. He wrote many poems for children, for which he received the most prestigious international award in the field of children's literature – the Andersen Diploma of Honor. The poet received the honorary title of People's Writer and the Order of the Republic. A poet of the national revival, he created, together with Doina and Ion Aldea-Teodorovici, true hymns, such as "Răsai", "At the Capriana Monastery", "Eminescu", "Leave us in our law", "The Tear of Our Language". A boulevard in Chisinau and a number of educational institutions in the country bear the name of Grigore Vieru.
Grigore Vieru died on January 18, 2009, at the hospital, after a road accident that occurred on January 16.
