Flow of migrants declines, a part of Ukrainians return home

The flow of migrants has decreased compared with the first days of the decreeing of a state of emergency, but remains large. Out of the total 351,000 foreigners who entered Moldova from Ukraine, 247,000 crossed the country to Romania, 104,000 remained in Moldova, while 12,500 returned to Ukraine, IPN reports.

The head of the Border Police Rosian Vasiloi in a press briefing said that Moldova has never witnessed such a large flow of migrants, but the designed plans enabled to manage the crisis in the most efficient way.

All the border crossing points with Ukraine – 21 international and five intestate – and those with Romania are functional. To ease traffic, the personnel of the Border Police were supplemented. The work program of the Lipcani-Rădăuți Prut day border crossing point was modified and this now functions nonstop. Conditions for providing medical assistance were created at the most popular frontier posts. After the Moldovan airspace was closed, a large part of the personnel of the Chisinau International Airport were assigned to other tactical subdivisions of the Border Police.

So far, there were reported 185 cases of illegal crossing of the state border. Over 650 mostly Ukrainian men aged between 18 and 60 tried to avoid checks on the Moldovan boarder following the imposition of restrictive exit measures by Ukraine. About 400 of them asked for asylum in Moldova, while over 80 were subject to readmission and were handed over to the Ukrainian authorities. More than 170 cases are being dealt with.
