Flood waters retreat from Alexandreni

Flood waters have retreated from Alexandreni village, Singerei district, leaving behind about 30 households in mire, with 8 houses being severely damaged. In some places the waters reached levels as high as two meters, Info-Prim Neo learned from local sources. Numerous basements have been flooded and crops affected. A house collapsed and its elderly dweller was taken in by her son. “In the past, people would dig ditches to drain rainwater. But now the ponds around the village are in private hands. There are also more structures today that obstructed the drainage, so the floodwater accumulated until the dam broke”, says Mila Tiganeta, a local functionary. Alexandreni was among the tens of villages that were affected by heavy rains at the weekend. The local authorities decided to reinforce the village dam to avoid further incidents.
