Flood warnings for Nistru and Prut
The heavy rainfall in Ukraine in the last two days has created dangerous conditions that may lead to flooding along the Nistru and the Prut. Emergencies Service spokeswoman Liliana Puscasu has told Info-Prim Neo the water level at the Costesti-Stinca dam on the Prut rose to 93.18 meters, with just a couple of meters left until the dam's maximum retention level. To somewhat relieve the pressure on the dam, the discharge was increased to 600 cubic meters per second.
Some local events of flooding have already occurred in the villages of Corpaci, Edinet district, Balatina, Glodeni district, and Varatic, Riscani district, with some areas of farmland affected. Other villages – Brinza and Chislita-Prut, Cahul district; and Antonesti and Stoianovca, Cantemir district – are at an immediate risk of flooding. In Moldova's westernmost village of Criva, Briceni district, a 20-meter protection wall was erected to prevent flooding.
The flood wave estimated at 3,000 cubic meters per second on the Nistru River may lead to a rise in the water level of up to 3 meters, which will result in flooding in the districts of Criuleni, Grigoriopol, Anenii-Noi, Slobozia, and Stefan-Vodă.
