The local authorities and inhabitants of Comrat town will help the three families whose homes were inundated as a result of the flooding of a local lake into the Ialpug River. Contacted by IPN, mayor of Comrat Sergiu Anastasov said locals mobilized to help the affected families and will donate furniture and other necessary things.
According to the mayor, the flood-stricken families will be lodged at a local dorm for the period of the repair works. About 20,000 lei will be allocated from the municipal fund for these works. On February 27, a meeting with representatives of Moldova’s Water Agency will be held in Comrat to decide the steps that need to be taken further to reinforce the levees. In 2002 the town was also affected by floods.
The level of water in the lake began to increase as a result of snow melting following the higher temperatures during the last few days. Teams of firemen built up levees with sacks of sand on a number of streets of Comrat in order to protect the homes.
