On Ukraine’s Independence Day, Ukrainian refugees in Moldova donned traditional embroidered shirts, called vyshyvanka, and unfurled a huge Ukrainian flag as a symbol of unity. The manifestation took place on the granite staircase at Valea Morilor Park in Chisinau, with the ambassadors of Ukraine and Japan in attendance.
The participants then marched through the park, singing the national anthem of Ukraine. They said that they feel good in Moldova, although they miss home and hope that they will be able to return to Ukraine as soon as possible.
This year, too, the Ukrainian people celebrated Independence Day with a brutal war still raging. People hope that the next anniversary will be different and they can finally enjoy peace.
They expressed their gratitude for the way they are treated in Moldova, for the support and encouragement they receive.
This year, similar flashmob events to mark Ukraine’s Independence were held in all the countries with Ukrainian communities.
