Fixer arrested for asking €6,000 to end proceedings in statutory rape case

A 59-year-old Chisinau man has been arrested on suspicion of asking and receiving a bribe of €6,000 from a Yaloveni man to influence the prosecutors to end criminal proceedings against the man’s son, charged with statutory rape, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the Anticorruption Center (CCCEC), which arrested the fixer, the man claimed he had influence over the prosecutor conducting the case and promised his ‘client’ that all suspicion and charges hanging over his son would be lifted. To save his son, at first the father decided to put his house for sale, but then changed his mind and reported the case to the CCCEC. The proceedings initiated against the fixer will be conducted by the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office. If found guilty by court, the man could face a fine of up to 100,000 lei and imprisonment of up to 7 years.
