Five persons from Cahul infected with anthrax

Five men from Cahul district were admitted to the Chisinau Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases “Toma Ciorba” with anthrax. The hospital’s director Victor Deatisen has told IPN that the men worked at a private farm in Vadul lui Isac village of Cahul district. They got infected from an animal that they slaughtered. The patients are aged between 30 and 47. Their state of health is stable and they will remain hospitalized for about two weeks.

The case of anthrax was discovered on September 3, after the National Public Health Center received a notice from the Cahul Public Health Center concerning a suspect case of cutaneous anthrax in a man aged 47. The man said that in the middle of August, he and another four men slaughtered a calf at a farm. In a week, he saw rashes erupting on his hands, but didn’t go to see a doctor. He went to the family doctor on August 31 and was admitted to the Cahul District Hospital. On September 3, the medical council established that the man suffered from cutaneous anthrax.

A team of specialists from Cahul launched an investigation and identified another four men with rashes, who had been in contact with animals. They were all hospitalized. A group of experts was sent to Cahul to examine the circumstances of the appearance of this infection and to take measures.

Anthrax is an infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis. The cutaneous form is a lighter form and it seldom leads to death.
