Three liver and two kidney transplants were performed over the past week at the National Hospital in Chisinau after the families of three brain-dead patients agreed to donate the organs and save other people’s lives.
Igor Codreanu, director of the Transplantation Agency, told IPN the beneficiaries were selected from a waiting list after many years of hope. “It’s a rare occurrence when you see three brain-dead donors in three consecutive days. Three families accepted donated organs from close relatives, including two mothers who accepted donated organis from their children”.
The National Hospital said in a press release that the beneficiaries were in critical conditions after years on the waiting list.
All the surgeries were successful and the recipients are stable and under constant supervision.
Besides the already donated organs, two corneas taken from the brain-dead patients are awaiting their recipients.
From the beginning of this year, 17 kidney and 11 liver transplants have been performed in Moldova. The Transplantation Agency’s waiting list currently includes 70 patients in need of new livers and 30 patients requiring new kidneys.
