Fissures in walls of education institutions as a result of quake

Fissures appeared in the walls of a number of education institutions of Chisinau as a result of last night's earthquake. At a kindergarten located in Centru distrcit, a window broke, while at another one in Botanica district, the children's access to a wing of the building will be restricted. The data were presented in an emergency meeting at the Chisinau City Hall on September 24, IPN reports.

Viorica Negrei, deputy head of the General Division of Education, Youth and Sport, said the situation is the worst at the Lyceum "B.P. Hasdeu”, where a wide fissure appeared in the wall. Experts are to decide if the students will have access to the building or not. Kindegarten No. 89 in Botanica also sustained damage.

Emergencies Division head Vitalie Grabovski said the recent earthquake was the most powerfully felt one in Chisinau after 1990. People called the emergency phone numbers to ask what to do in case of aftershocks.

Health Division deputy head Constantin Ramis stated there are no casualties, but the population is on the alert. A number of pregnant women felt ill after the quake and went to the Municipal Hospital No. 1 after assistance.

Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca concluded that no essential damage was caused. He instructed the diviisons to check the facilities in their charge and to deal with the identified problems. A final report is to be presented next Monday.

The quake of the night of September 24 measured 5.8 degrees on the Richter scale. It had an intensity of 5 degrees all over Moldova, on a scale of 12. The last similar earthquake occurred in November 2014, when this measured 5.7 degrees on the Richter scale.
