Fish consumption on the rise. MAIA: Choose local product at Christmas and all year round

In 2023, fish consumption in Moldova reached 37,509 tons, marking an increase compared to the previous year, with a consumption of 36,888 tons. The data show that, on average, each inhabitant consumed 15.5 kilograms of fish and fish products, IPN reports.

However, domestic fish production, estimated at around 14,000 tons last year, fails to meet market demand and imports remain essential.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) underlines the significant potential of the domestic fish sector and is implementing measures to support it.

Farmers who invest in fish farming infrastructure can benefit from subsidies covering up to 50% of the costs of machinery and construction materials, with a maximum ceiling of 5 million lei per beneficiary. Between 2021-2023, around 6 million lei have been allocated to fish farmers.

With the "Choose local produce at Christmas and all year round" campaign, the authorities are encouraging citizens to support local production, not only during the holidays, but all year round. This measure contributes to the development of local farms and reduces dependence on imports, says MAIA.
