The first yellow road markings were painted at the intersection of Stefan cel Mare Blvd. and Pushkin St in Chisinau. According to the local authorities, the markings show the drivers cannot stop on the yellow segment so as not to cause traffic jams. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the head of the municipal road maintenance company “Exdrupo” Efim Cheptanari said similar markings will soon appear at the intersection of the streets Columna and Pushkin and Stefan cel Mare Blvd. and Eminescu St. A sum of 3 million lei was earmarked for the purpose. The drivers who will stop on the yellow section will not be yet penalized. Traffic Police Division press officer Aurelia Mija said the road traffic regulations do not envision punishments for such acts. “Such road markings are new, borrowed from European countries, and we thus do not have the legal framework needed to punish the drivers yet,” she stated. At the start of May, the mayor of Chisinau instructed the relevant divisions to pain the road markings at the most important intersections of the city yellow.
