First smart traffic lights set up in Chisinau

The first smart traffic lights were put into operation in Chisinau. The devices assess the number of motor vehicles at an intersection and determine independently the wavelength on lanes so as to reduce traffic congestion, mayor general Ion Ceban posted on social media.

The Dacia Blvd – Băcioii Noi St intersection is the first one in the municipality of Chisinau where the traffic lights were replaced with smart ones. According to the mayor, this is the most dangerous intersection in the municipality, where 70% of the road accidents are fatal ones, as the police said.

The intersection was reorganized to ensure the safety of pedestrians. The sidewalks were renovated, parapets were set up and the public transport stations are being relocated. The total cost of works is over 4 million lei.

In the future, smart traffic lights will be also installed at other intersections on Dacia Blvd, on the section between Băcioii Noi St and Burebista St. The high risk areas will be assessed and it will be decided where such intersections need to be modernized.

This year, the lighting company “Lumteh” modernized the traffic lights at a number of intersections in Chisinau, namely: Sarmizegetusa St (intersection with the streets Minsk, Burebista, Zelinski, Cuza Vodă, Gr. Botanică), Cuza Vodă, Calea Orheiului, and Trandafirilor.
