First national park to be created

The natural and cultural reservation Orheiul Vechi, the Trebujeni landscape reservation, the Curchi Monastery and forest and the Tiganesti Monastery will soon become landmarks of the Orhei National Park, the first Moldovan national park, Info-Prim Neo reports regarding a governmental decision. The park will stretch over a 33.7 hectare area, within the boundaries of the districts of Orhei, Straseni, Calarasi and Criuleni. According to Minister of the Environment Gheorghe Salaru, the creation of the Orhei National Park will attract local and foreign investment that will help to preserve biodiversity, to restore forests and water resources. Also, this will boost the tourism sector and folk craftsmanship, thus creating new job opportunities in the rural areas of the National Park. The Orhei National Park will be subordinated to the forestry agency “Moldsilva”, given that more than half of the future Park's area is covered by forests, which require specific maintenance work. The funds required for creating and maintaining the park will be allotted from the State Budget and other sources, including environmental programs and grants, and proceeds from services provided by the Park’s administration, for example advertisements or eco-tourism activities. The founding documents for the Park have been developed with support from UNDP Moldova as part of the “Improving coverage and management effectiveness of the Protected Area System in Moldova” Project.
