First Moldovans in Australian Open
Roman Borvanov and Radu Albot will be the first Moldovan tennis players to compete in the qualifiers of the Australian Open, a Grand Slam tournament, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Both will start their qualifying campaigns with fixtures against Russian players, with Borvanov to encounter Igor Andreev and Albot to play Denis Matsukevich. To qualify, each has to pass three qualifying rounds.
“Both players are ready. They have been training in Australia for a week now. They are very motivated and we expect good results”, Marina Tauber, the president of the Moldovan Tennis Federation, told Info-Prim Neo.
Roman Borvanov, 29, is the first Moldovan tennis player to have competed in a Grand Slam tournament, in the 2011 US Open.
Radu Albot, 22, competes for the first time in such a tournament. If successful, he will increase his chances to obtain a ticket to the 2012 London Olympics.
