First liver transplantation performed in Moldova

The first liver transplantation was done in Moldova after a long period of time. A 53-year-old woman from Hancesti was transplanted a part of her son’s liver. The surgery was performed by a medical-surgical team consisting of eight persons, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Government. Surgery Department chair Vladimir Hotineanu, who formed part of the team of surgeons, said the operation took place without complications. The surgery was conducted by surgeon Irinel Popescu from Romania, who heads the Surgery and Liver Transplantation Clinic of the Fundeni Hospital in Bucharest. He said it was an important step for Moldova. “I hope we will establish fruitful cooperation relations and will have good results in the future,” said Irinel Popescu. The operation costs were covered by the National Health Insurance Company. If the patient does not develop complications, the recover period may last for about one month. The woman’s son will be discharged in a week. Moldova aims to perform 10 transplantations a year.
