First hearing at Appeals Court in case of ex-Premier Filat put off

The hearing to examine the appeals of the prosecution and defense in the case of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat was put off until September 27. The lawyers told the press that not all the appellants presented themselves, IPN reports.

“The appealing parties were to be summoned in accordance with the law by the court or the clerk. Regretfully, the appellants weren’t provided with evidence of legal summoning. Thus, the hearing was proponed through the judges’ fault,” said lawyer Igor Popa. He didn’t give details as to who the other appellants are, saying only that these are persons interested in the trial, who consider that the decision of the first court is illegal and groundless.

The lawyer also said that today he was to ask that the hearings in this case should be made public. For the next hearings, the defense will invite witnesses who were rejected by the first court as well as witnesses from Russia, who are ex-employees of a bank. The mayor of Orhei Ilan Shor and businessman Veaceslav Platon will also be summoned.

The Buiucani Court of Chisinau on June 27, 2016 sentenced Vlad Filat to nine years in jail and fined him 60,000 lei. It also ordered to confiscate illegally obtained property to the value of 791 million lei. The prosecutors consider the sentence is too mild and demand that the former Premier be jailed for 19 years. Vlad Filat pleads not guilty.
