First exhibition of Romanian archive documents staged in Chisinau

The National Museum of Archeology and History of Moldova for the first time is housing an exhibition of Romanian archive documents centering on the ceding of Bessarabia to the former USSR in 1940, Info-Prim Neo reports. The exhibit “Concession of Bessarabia, Northern Bucovina and Hertsa Region (1940) – between powerlessness and irresponsibility. Romanian perspective” includes archive documents, photographs and epoch documentaries of the 1940s,” the director of the National Archives of Romania Dorin Dobrincu said in the opening of the event. According to him, the concession of Bessarabia led to greater territorial claims on the part of Hungary and Bulgaria, the weakening of the Romanian state, and the diminution of its prestige at international level. Historian Igor Casu said that Romania did not have a choice as the USSR prepared an invasion plan that was to be applied if Bessarabia hadn’t been ceded and the whole territory of the historical Moldova may have been occupied. Attending the event, Deputy Minister of Culture Gheorghje Postica stressed the importance of better knowing the past, especially those tragic events of our people. The exhibit is open until May 30. Entrance is free of charge.
