First defense minister publishes book about Nistru war

General Ion Costas has launched his book “Days of the Eclipse or Chronicles of the Undeclared War” that is about the historical events through which Moldova went in 1989-1993. Besides the author’s personal assessments, the book contains a series of documents about the start of the Nistru war and the creation of the unrecognized Transnistrian republic, Info-Prim Neo reports. The work deals with important historical events like the arrest and release of the Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov, the removal of Mircea Druc from the political arena, the sharing of the Soviet Army’s property, and the foundation of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. “I aimed to get at the hidden historical truth. Why the Moldovan state was not preserved together with Transnistria and who was interested in this – these are the main questions that I wanted to answer in this book,” said Ion Costas. Political analyst Anatol Taranu said the approaches used in the work will generate different reactions among politicians, but Ion Costas probably knows better than many the subtleties of the Moldovan politics. “There is information that our society should know as this is the history of the Moldovan state. If we want to build up as a nation and country, we must know the views of those who were involved in those events,” said Anatol Taranu. The book is in Russian, but will be translated into Romanian and English. It was printed at Universul publishing house in 2000 copies. In bookstores, it is available for 200 lei. In1990, Ion Costas was named chairman of the Commission on State Security and Military Matters of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1990-1992, he served as Minister of the Interior. On February 5, 1992 he was named Minister of Defense by presidential decree, but was dismissed several months later. Afterward, he worked as military attaché in Romania and was recalled in October 1993. Ion Costas was awarded the order “For service in the national armed forces”. Last February, General Victor Catan conferred the Merit Cross – the highest award of the Ministry of the Interior - on him on the occasion of his birthday.
