First criminal case over false tax returns started in Moldova

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office completed the investigation and sent to court the criminal case started against the director of the Ministry of the Interior’s General Analysis, Monitoring and Policy Assessment Division over false tax returns, IPN has learned from the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).

The criminal case was started following information about inconsistencies and omissions in the income and property statements of the public servant for 2011 and 2012, provided by the National Integrity Commission.

Thus, the director didn’t declare a vehicle, a building, bank accounts, incomes earned as dividends from companies and other data. After he was charged, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office requested the Ministry of the Interior to suspend him from post, but the prosecutors’ request was rejected.

According to the PGO, this is the first criminal case of the kind sent by prosecutors to court. The suspect faces a fine of 12,000 lei, one year behind bars and ban on holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of up to five years.

More such cases involving persons holding executive posts are being examined.
