First complete dictionary of Bassarabian literary biographies to be launched on national holiday Our Language

The first complete dictionary of Bassarabian literary biographies will be launched in Chisinau within the festivities dedicated to the National Holiday “Limba Noastra”. “Dictionary of Romanian Writers in Bassarabia (1812-2006)” published by “Prut International” publishing house, comprises in its 600 pages over 500 names of poets and fiction writers, literary historians and critics, playwrights and publishers, translators and folklore writers. Being elaborated by a group of authors from the Museum of Romanian Literature “M.Kogalniceanu”, the dictionary is an important reference book both through the literary and cultural values it promotes and the rich information on the national cultural past. Chairman of the Writers Union of Moldova, Mihai Cimpoi, explains in the dictionary’s introduction the role and merit of the book: “It represents a bouquet of documents and sources impressing as a database required for the first stage of literary historiography synthesis”. The authors used various selection criteria depending on the specific features of the literary epoch. They included in the dictionary most of the writers from the period 1812 to the beginning of World War II, considering the fact that after 1812 Bassarabia had just a few personalities in the Romanian literature and culture domain, with the training process remaining a main factor in banning the Romanian language in the region. From the interwar period we have notorious names of writers, including people of culture, politicians who made career also in Romania, or who were born in Romania but operated in Bassarabia. P. Halippa, I. Buzdugan, Al. David, A. Lutcan etc. are among them. Authors members of the Writers Union were selected from the contemporary period, among them being Vl. Besleaga, E. Bucov, A. Busuioc, L. Butnaru, Val Butnaru, P. Carare, C. Cheianu, M. Cimpoi, V. Ciobanu, Iu. Colesnic, N. Costenco, N. Dabija, L. Deleanu, I. Druta, N. Esinencu, Iu. Filip, E. Galaicu-Paun, I. Hadarca, L. Lari, A. Lupan, D. Matcovschi, G. Meniuc, V. Romanciuc, A. Scobioala, C. Tanase etc. The articles on authors describe the most important moments of the writers’ life and activity, presenting briefly both the published and unpublished works. They also refer to the publications the authors contributed to, as well as to the awarded prizes and merits. The dictionary’s novelty is the essential bibliography references to the patrimony of the Museum of Literature. The dictionary is illustrated by photos from the archive and collections of the Museum of Romanian Literature, as well as from the writers’ private ones.
