Fire blamed on burning cigarette claims life
A young man from Chisinau was killed in a fire caused by a burning cigarette on February 16.
Dorina Cruc, spokeswomen for the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, has told Info-Prim Neo that the fire happened in a house in Chisinau's Rascani district. The firefighters took prompt action and extinguished the fire quickly, but the 25-year-old man could not be saved. A burning cigarette is being blamed for the fire. According to the Service, the fires took 14 lives in January alone. A man aged 23 from Ocnita town died in a fire caused by a dropped cigarette on February 4.
A ship navigating along the Nistru escaped sinking. After the State Civil Navigation Inspectorate sounded the alarm, the administration and rescuers squads of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service traveled to Vadul lui Voda town, where the ship was moored. The ship had a fissure on the rights side and the water was coming into the hold. The water was quickly removed and the fissure was stopped up.
The 277 fires that happened in Moldova this year resulted in 52 deaths.
